There is a before and after for energy, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As the invasion of Ukraine is endangering the delivery of gas and oil from Russia, prices have hit new peaks. Although there is a verbal escalation,
Experts agree that the route to a clean, sustainable environment leads through electric power. Though when it comes to deciding exactly how the green transition is going to happen, opinions diverge. The way in which we will obtain abundant, affordable electric energy to power the gigantic needs of the transition will make the difference between success and failure, which will translate in an unsustainable future for the planet and life on earth - at least human life.
Decision making in policy setting can be an enormously complicated task. One needs to be able to foresee the consequences of decisions, while minding costs, time and effort required. While some may prefer using poll results to guide their judgment, Paweł would like to advocate for a rigorous process of using computer models and simulations to find the best solution for complex problems.
The presentation gives an introduction to how modelling and simulation can be used to help decision making. It is aimed as a general introduction to the topic and suitable for a wide audience. Approximately half of the presentation will be used to introduce important concepts and the other half to demonstrate interactively a number of models.
