In 2021, 375 trans and gender-diverse people were reported killed globally. 2021 was the most violent year in US history for Trans and Gender Non Conforming people.
What is Transgender Day of Remembrance?
TDOR was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.
It is an annual observance on November 20 that honors the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.
How can the situation improve?
Discrimination often results from a lack of knowledge about transsexual and transident people. Education, visibility and the further adjustment of legal regulations are necessary in order to reduce prejudices against trans * people. Rigid gender stereotypes and conservative role models and ideas do not get us any further in the 21st century. Instead, education and awareness are key. Gender self-determination is a human right, discrimination and unequal treatment towards trans * people must be pointed out and named.
Diversity and a colorful society are part of us. Let us continue to work to reduce inequalities.
